Why choose a .DEMOCRAT domain?

One caution before anything else: this word is not neutral. In North American English, “Democrat” does not mean somebody who favours democracy in general — it means a member or supporter of the Democratic Party of the United States. A reader will take the address as a statement of allegiance whatever you intended. That is ideal if it is deliberate, and to be avoided if you simply wanted a word suggesting civic participation.

The American context

The extension was created for United States political life. Elsewhere the word carries no equivalent party meaning: it reads as an American reference.

The campaign

Candidate, platform, district, election calendar. A site that lives for a few months at maximum intensity, then becomes an archive.

Funding

Donations, limits, disclosure of contributions. A field tightly governed by law, and differently in every jurisdiction.

Volunteers

Canvassing, phone banks, voter registration, rides on polling day. Volunteer organisation is the real machinery of a campaign.

Disclosure

Who publishes the site, who pays for it, required legal notices. In political matters these notices are not optional.

What it actually changes

• The word is partisan, not generic. That is the first thing to know, and it rules the suffix out for neutral use.
• Its anchor is American. For an organisation elsewhere, .vote, .community or .group communicate better without the party colouring.
• No registration restrictions. No party affiliation to demonstrate to the registrar.
• It works as an email address too. volunteers@campaign.democrat keeps volunteer organising apart from public correspondence.
