Why choose a .COMMUNITY domain?

This is very likely the most used and least earned word on the whole web. A subscriber list is not a community. Nor is a page followed by ten thousand people. A community is people who talk to each other — not only to you. It is the only definition that holds, and it is a demanding one. If your members have no reason to speak to one another, another word will serve you better.

People talking

A forum, a support group, a mailing list, a comments section. The question to ask: would it carry on without you?

The local area

A neighbourhood, a village, a residents’ association, a parish council. Community in the oldest sense: people who share a place.

The shared calendar

Meetings, working parties, AGMs, seasonal events. Often the most-visited page, and the one proving the group genuinely exists.

Moderation

Rules, sanctions, who decides and how it is appealed. Every community that grows eventually needs this: write it before you need it.

Joining

Open to all, by invitation, on subscription. How people get in defines the group as much as what happens inside it.

What it actually changes

• The word assumes exchange between members. That is what separates it from .group, which needs only a shared name, and .social, whose meaning has been taken over.
• It is almost identical in French. “Communauté” is recognised instantly, with no effort of reading.
• No registration restrictions. No charitable status or member count to demonstrate to the registrar.
• It works as an email address too. members@northbank.community separates the group’s internal life from its public face.
