Why choose a .BIO domain?

Few words diverge this sharply between languages. In English, a bio is a biography — the short introduction on a profile — or a reference to biology. In French, “bio” means organic: farming without pesticides, certification, the market grower, the wholefood shop. There, it is the dominant sense by a wide margin. Nothing connects the two markets. Know which one you are addressing, because the address will not say the same thing to every reader.

The false friend

A biography here, organic produce there. If both audiences matter, your first sentence has to remove the doubt immediately.

The personal page

One page: who you are, what you do, how to reach you. Widely used by speakers, writers and creators as a single memorable address.

Organic farming

Market gardening, boxes, farm shops, on-farm processing. A sector where customers want to know where it came from and who grew it.

Certification

Certifying body, registration number, conversion period. “Organic” is a legally controlled term: it cannot be claimed without certification.

Life sciences

Biotechnology, laboratories, research, biomedical work. A third use, rarer but entirely consistent with the root of the word.

What it actually changes

• The meaning depends on the language. A biography in English, organic in French: few words diverge this far.
• The organic sense is legally controlled. Where the word means organic, certification is required: the extension does not exempt you.
• No registration restrictions. The registrar verifies no certification — the certifying body, however, takes an interest.
• It is very short. Three letters, which stays rare and is dictated without hesitation.
